What should I include in my pitch abstract?

The purpose of the pitch abstract is to communicate the key information on your research idea and will actually include some of the required building blocks for your pitch presentation. Remember, while the research idea should be novel and sound, the competition is for the best pitch – i.e. the presentation that best convinces the investor panel on the value of the idea and how $50,000 would improve and/or better illustrate the potential value of the innovative idea itself.

Please ensure you incorporate the following elements in your pitch abstract:

  • State the big picture research idea and/or associated technology (what is it, what does it do?). As a reminder, eligible research ideas are any new innovative idea in the oncology space and developed in Ontario.
  • Provide information on the need or issue addressed (what is the problem?).
  • Describe how $50,000 would impact and further advance the research idea.
  • Include the commercial relevance/value of your idea (e.g. patient benefits that reach the market, and/or economic impacts such as job creation or capital generation).

Additional elements you may want to incorporate in your abstract that generally position pitches for better receptivity and success include:

  • Indicate the target audience/customer (what is the addressable market?)
  • State your key differentiator from competitors. This should hold obvious value to the target audience/customer.

Instructions on how to submit abstracts will be sent directly to applicants who submitted their “intent to participate” by the deadline.

The FACIT team will provide pitch preparation resources and support leading up to the event. Helpful resources on how to build your pitch deck as well as a list of other reference and support materials related to this topic can be found here.
